Nominet Governance Review – Call to Action!

Nominet’s Governance Review – Call to Action

As many of you will be aware, I am an elected member of Nominet’s policy advisory body (PAB).  Nominet is the .uk registry and the PAB acts as a bridge between Nominet stakeholders and the Board with the intention of channeling stakeholder feedback into the development of Nominet policy.

My role at Sedo helps me enormously in this regard as I work alongside a huge range of stakeholders in the .uk domain name industry with unique direct contact with thousands of .uk end-users, including domain investors, domain parkers, domain registrars, venture capitalists, content developers, advertising providers, SEO agencies, marketing/branding groups and small businesses.  In addition, the international scope of my work through the United Internet Group offers me an opportunity for perspective in comparing .uk with other ccTLDs as well as firsthand experience of the effects of Nominet policies on the end-users.  More than anything, however, the feedback and input from domain owners like yourselves enables me to share secondary market best practices and data, educate Nominet policy makers, IP professionals and the media about the value and benefits of direct navigation traffic and the domain name industry.

Nominet is currently undergoing a tumultuous period of policy and structural change driven by a far-reaching governance review at a time of exciting growth for the .uk domain name industry.  I believe the needs of stakeholders in both the primary and secondary markets can be aligned to ensure a sustainable and thriving .uk namespace set against a backdrop of internet self-regulation.  However, in order for Nominet and the UK space to continue to self-regulate, we need the UK stakeholders to lend their voice and give their feedback to the proposals set out in the recent Nominet Governance review.

With no shortage of threats and challenges on the horizon, it’s more important than ever for you to get involved to ensure your business interests are not eroded in the changing .uk landscape. If you are a Nominet member, I would urge you to support Nominet and the goal of self-regulation by giving your feedback today and would be very grateful for your continued support in my outreach work at Nominet so the needs and feedback of the multifaceted .uk domain name community can continue to be effectively communicated to Nominet and to help shape the development of future .uk policies.
